Developmental Delay
Developmental delay in children can significantly affect gross motor milestones, functional independence, and quality of life. Early identification and timely referral to physiotherapy play a critical role in improving outcomes through targeted, evidence-based interventions.
A 7-year-old child was referred to Annapurna Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation by a pediatrician with concerns of delayed gross motor development. At the time of referral, the child was unable to stand or walk independently and required continuous external support for mobility.
Age: 7 years
Diagnosis: Developmental delay (gross motor domain)
Functional limitations:
The child underwent 22 structured physiotherapy sessions, utilising evidence-based pediatric rehabilitation principles. Key components of the intervention included:
Therapy progression was regularly reviewed and adjusted based on the child’s response and functional gains.
After 22 physiotherapy sessions, the child demonstrated significant
functional improvement:
Achieved independent standing
Gained the ability to walk without external support
Improved balance, confidence, and overall mobility
These outcomes reflect meaningful progress in gross motor function and
age-appropriate independence.
This case highlights the effectiveness of individualised, evidence-based physiotherapy in managing developmental delay, even in older children with significant initial functional limitations. Early referral, structured intervention, and consistent therapy were key contributors to success.
The clinical outcome and rehabilitation progress were formally appreciated by the District Collector, acknowledging the effectiveness of the physiotherapy intervention.
The successful rehabilitation of this child reinforces the role of physiotherapy as a critical component in pediatric developmental care. At Annapurna Physiotherapy – Evolve Fitness & Wellness, a patient-centred and evidence-driven approach continues to support measurable, functional outcomes for children with developmental challenges.
